Craig Newmark, founder of Craigslist and craigconnects.org, recently profiled the highest grossing nonprofits and their use of social media. Newmark found that of the top 50 nonprofits, 92 percent link to at least one social media presence from their homepage (Facebook). Additionally, 90 percent link to their Twitter account, and 70 percent connect to YouTube.

Do the most successful organizations have the most engagement on social media? Not necessarily. Within in the top ten earners, the American Red Cross, number five on the list, is hands down the top contender in terms of Facebook fans and Twitter followers. However, some successful nonprofits, such as Catholic Charities USA, Catholic Medical Mission Board, and Mental Health America barely have a social media presence to speak of.

More nonprofits today are getting on the social media bandwagon to advance their mission and connect to stakeholders. It can be useful (and doable) if you have a strategy. Here are some quick tips if your organization needs a nudge to start using social media, or just wants to take it to the next level.

Have clear goals for your social media campaigns. What do you want to accomplish? Create SMART objectives (specific, measureable, attainable, relevant, and timely), and track the payoff from your efforts by using this return on investment calculator.

Make sure you have staff and/or volunteers familiar with social media available to help your organization provide a steady stream of on-topic, engaging messaging. If you’re concerned about giving up control, consider creating a social media policy to provide training and support, such as the one Mayo Clinic provides to its employees.

Identify the social media platforms that are the best fit for your organization. What are you already doing? What are similar nonprofits to yours doing? Ask your existing supporters and volunteers which social media platforms they use. What do they think would be most effective?

Invest in your profile. A profile that is professional and engaging will pay off. For tips and tricks, visit nonprofit social media guru Beth Kanter’s blog.

Have a conversation with your fans and followers. Keep your questions and content varied to keep things interesting and get more feedback. Post dynamic content that your followers will want to repost. Comment on their responses. Retweet content from those you follow as well as from your followers.

Provide opportunities for your network to get involved offline. Post events and donation requests. Follow up and let the community know the results.

Newmark and his team offered this advice: “It’s about fostering conversations and interactions, not money. These are the keys to keeping up in the fast-paced arena of social networks.”

Amy Sample Ward, community development manager at Tech Soup Global, notes that “most research shows that if you have two hours total in a week, you can be successful in social media…Ask your constituents what they want, create a strategy and spend a half-hour, four days a week making sure the content is there for them. It’s not that much to commit to and it doesn’t have to drive you crazy.”

In today’s society, organizations are sized up by their social media presence. With a defined strategy and targeted resources, nonprofits can make social media work for them. I hope these pointers provide some useful tools for your organization to expand its network and deepen engagement with stakeholders through social media. If you have questions or need more information, contact your trusted social media guru, or me.

After all, you can always change direction. But, in an attempt to appear decisive, leaders may prematurely push for an answer. And if there isn’t a clear conclusion, they’ll provide one. This undermines a team’s ability to make a collective decision. Pretty soon people stop participating because they assume you’ve made up your mind in advance. If you can’t agree, don’t impose an answer. Instead, end the discussion by putting a process in place that yields decisions — even slowly-made ones — that everyone can accept. That way you won’t lose your people’s goodwill next time around.

“Building a network helps entrepreneurs get their product to market and get the right people in place,” says Alice Heiman, networking and sales expert and author of e-book Connecting Your Way to New Business. Heiman suggests five basic rules for building a trusted network that will help your startup succeed.

1. Start early.

“Start building your network when you start building your product,” Heiman says. Developing, creating, improving and finally perfecting your product or service is important, but entrepreneurs can become so focused on making something people want that they forget to make personal connections. “If you focus in on just that product, you’re missing the opportunity to start building your network,” she says.

2. Make a list.

So you know when to start building a network. The next question is, how? “The first thing I recommend is you make a list,” Heiman says, noting that entrepreneurs are going to need help with their business, whether in manufacturing, financing, marketing or some other vital step. “Start thinking about what kind of people you will need in order to get your product to market,” she says. Write that information down–then the search begins.

“I want my network to be one of people who know me, like me and trust me, because that is the only usable network.”

–Alice Heiman

3. Take advantage of available resources.

There are great free resources to help entrepreneurs in the early stages of product and business development, such as SCORE. Heiman recommends visiting your local SCORE branch; it’s an ideal starting point for building your network. With 364 chapters nationwide and more than 13,000 volunteers with experience in 62 industries, chances are there is a SCORE location near you with knowledgeable people who would be happy to join your network.

Most entrepreneurs know networking is important, but they may not realize just how crucial it is to the success of their new venture.

“Building a network helps entrepreneurs get their product to market and get the right people in place,” says Alice Heiman, networking and sales expert and author of e-book Connecting Your Way to New Business. Heiman suggests five basic rules for building a trusted network that will help your startup succeed.

4. Do your homework.

When you’re busy starting a business, time is a commodity of which you will never have enough. Before wasting it on trying to make a connection with someone, do your homework and make sure you can both benefit each other. Heiman gives an example: If you’re in the technology industry, you don’t want to spend time pitching a firm that only invests in fruit companies. Refer to your list and seek individuals who can either fulfill the roles you need or who might be able to introduce you to someone who can. If you catch yourself attempting to connect with the wrong source, you can always ask if he or she can refer you to someone else.

5. Make a real connection.

Clicking “friend” isn’t enough. “My definition of networking is connecting,” Heiman says. “I want my network to be one of people who know me, like me and trust me, because that is the only usable network.” So what is the best way to make that connection? Heiman says introductions are always best. You can use whatever route is easiest for you–online or off. But whatever approach you take, be sure to build a genuine relationship. “Let them know a little bit about you,” she says. “Bring some value into their life.”

His innovations have likely touched nearly every aspect — computers, movies, music and mobile. As a communications coach, I learned from Jobs that a presentation can, indeed, inspire.

For entrepreneurs, Jobs greatest legacy is the set of principles that drove his success.Over the years, Ive become a student of sorts of Jobs career and life.

Heres my take on the rules and values underpinning his success. Any of us can adopt them to unleash our “inner Steve Jobs.”

1. Do what you love.

Jobs once said, “People with passion can change the world for the better.” Asked about the advice he would offer would-be entrepreneurs, he said, “Id get a job as a busboy or something until I figured out what I was really passionate about.” Thats how much it meant to him. Passion is everything.

2. Put a dent in the universe.

Jobs believed in the power of vision. He once asked then-Pepsi President, John Sculley, “Do you want to spend your life selling sugar water or do you want to change the world?” Dont lose sight of the big vision.Related: Why Entrepreneurs Love Steve Jobs

3. Make connections.

Jobs once said creativity is connecting things. He meant that people with a broad set of life experiences can often see things that others miss. He took calligraphy classes that didnt have any practical use in his life — until he built the Macintosh. Jobs traveled to India and Asia. He studied design and hospitality. Dont live in a bubble. Connect ideas from different fields.

4. Say no to 1,000 things.

Jobs was as proud of what Apple chose not to do as he was of what Apple did. When he returned in Apple in 1997, he took a company with 350 products and reduced them to 10 products in a two-year period. Why? So he could put the “A-Team” on each product. What are you saying “no” to?

5. Create insanely different experiences.

Jobs also sought innovation in the customer-service experience. When he first came up with the concept for the Apple Stores, he said they would be different because instead of just moving boxes, the stores would enrich lives. Everything about the experience you have when you walk into an Apple store is intended to enrich your life and to create an emotional connection between you and the Apple brand. What are you doing to enrich the lives of your customers?

6. Master the message.

You can have the greatest idea in the world, but if you cant communicate your ideas, it doesnt matter. Jobs was the worlds greatest corporate storyteller. Instead of simply delivering a presentation like most people do, he informed, he educated, he inspired and he entertained, all in one presentation.

7. Sell dreams, not products.

Jobs captured our imagination because he really understood his customer. He knew that tablets would not capture our imaginations if they were too complicated. The result? One button on the front of an iPad. Its so simple, a 2-year-old can use it.

Your customers dont care about your product. They care about themselves, their hopes, their ambitions. Jobs taught us that if you help your customers reach their dreams, youll win them over.

Theres one story that I think sums up Jobs career at Apple. An executive who had the job of reinventing the Disney Store once called up Jobs and asked for advice. His counsel? Dream bigger.

I think thats the best advice he could leave us with. See genius in your craziness, believe in yourself, believe in your vision, and be constantly prepared to defend those ideas.

Everybody, me included, jumped on the social media bandwagon.

Everybody is on the “Social Networking” or “Social Marketing”. Mark Schaefer rightly points out that:

“Social interaction offers an inexpensive and broad way to paint a high level view of a market sentiment but only the laziest marketer will think this is enough to really do the job right. Social media is not the new conversation. That conversation has been out there as long as there have been people trading goods and more than ever, you need to get out there, see your customers, listen to them intently, and respond quickly, sensitively, and passionately to their wants and needs. Go have a REAL conversation.”

Don’t discard your social networking program, but read Mark’s worthwhile read… Follow the link below.

It could be that your website isn’t properly optimized for search engines.

Google indexes not only websites, but also images, videos, local listings, news stories, blog posts, and more. Google calls their search results “Universal Search” and blends listings from all types of content it gathers from crawling the World Wide Web. You need to optimize your entire online presence, not just your website.

The fundamentals for optimizing a B2B site are essentially the same as a B2C site, though there are differences. Information needs are different for B2B buyers, so the type of content and how it’s optimized will be different for B2B.

Optimizing all your online content will bring more visitors to your website and ultimately generate more leads. With that said, here are 22 SEO tips to optimize your online B2B presence:

Participate in Social Media – SEOMoz released a study correlating data from over 10,000 keyword rankings and the factors that influence Google to highly rank a website. The study found that social media activity is correlated with higher Google rankings.

Optimize White Papers – Document sharing is a great way to increase awareness of your company’s products and services, build inbound links to help boost SEO, and drive traffic to your website. If your company isn’t posting your B2B white papers on Scribd, you need to start doing it now. Within one hour of us uploading a demand generation white paper for our company, we received a Google Alert informing us that Google picked it up on Scribd. Now that’s quick!

Start a Blog – Search engines love lots of content and fresh stories. Blogs have both. Plus, B2B companies that blog generate 67% more leads per month than those that don’t according to Hubspot.

Claim Your Listing on Business Directories – There are a number of free business directories such asBusiness.com, Manta, and others. These directories are indexed well by Google. Business.com’s directory has dozens of categories from Construction to Industrial to Telecommunications. Put your business in the right category. Make sure you show up when prospects are looking.

Optimize Images – Search engines cannot see images so you need to do some optimization to get them crawled. Use alt text and captions for your photos. Place the most important keywords towards the beginning of the caption and include keywords in the file name. Keep the caption short and don’t spam the image by stuffing it with keywords.

Put Presentations Online – Upload your PowerPoint presentation to Slideshare, the world’s largest community for sharing presentations. Worried your competition might find out something about your company? Honestly, don’t worry about it. Stop caring about your competitors and start caring about your customers. There’s probably nothing you can share that your competition doesn’t already know about anyway. Plus, if the White House can use Slideshare, you can, too.

Write SEO-Friendly Press Releases – Use a service like PRNewswire or PRWeb and get your press releases distributed to bloggers and other online outlets. You’ll show up in Google News.

Create a LinkedIn Company Profile– Take advantage of a free LinkedIn listing for your company. Integrate your social media feeds into your profile, embed targeted keywords in your company description, and add eye-catching banners to promote your products and services. After we optimized our LinkedIn profile, our number of followers skyrocketed and our listing shows up on page one of Google.

Optimize YouTube Videos – Insert targeted keywords for your business in the video title and description. Include a hyperlink in the description back to your website. Make sure the hyperlink is within the first sentence. Use keywords when you tag the video, too. Limit tags to no more than 10 to prevent “keyword stuffing”.

Submit Site to Search Engines – Expedite search engine spiders finding your site by manually submitting it to search engines. Submit your site to Yahoo Site Explorer, Bing Webmaster Tools, andGoogle Webmaster Tools.

Use Description Tags – The Meta Description Tag is shown on the search engine results page as the summary snippet for your website. Description tags are limited to 160 characters including spaces. If you don’t use Description Tags, Google will choose for you what your listing says. Don’t rely on Google. Tell Google what you want to show.

Claim Google Place Listing – A completed Google Places listing makes it easier for customers to find you on Google. Listings show up on Google Maps and get ranked on the first page of Google. Include photos, videos, hours of operation, offers and promotions, and company description.

Write Error-Free HTML Code – Code that is written cleanly without any programing errors can rank higher than a site that has coding errors (broken links, missing commands, improperly formatted URL’s, etc.). Use a Markup Validation Service to check whether your website follows the HTML standards as set by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

Move Your Blog Under Your Domain – If your blog is hosted outside your domain (such as on Blogger, Tumblr, or WordPress.com), you’re not getting Google credit for all the traffic you’re driving to your blog. Move your blog within your website has a subdirectory like http://www.yourcompany.com/blog and not as a subdomain like http://www.blog.yourcompany.com.

Create Title Tags – Title tags are shown in search results as the headline for your webpage. Title tags also appear at the top of the browser window when someone is visiting your site. Title tags are prominent and important. The maximum length is 70 characters and anything after that is shown with an ellipsis. So stay within that limit. Make sure you place keywords in your title tags.

Use Anchor Text – Don’t use “click here” when linking from one page of your site to another. Instead, use anchor text strategically to embed a hyperlink behind a targeted keyword. For example, if your B2B company manufactures product lifecycle management software, hyperlink any mention of “entire product lifecycle” of your website to a key page on your website, perhaps a diagram illustrating a typical product lifecycle.

Create a Site Map – A site map helps search spiders index your content. It’s essentially a Table of Contents for your website, ensuring that hard-to-find pages are scanned up by the spider.

Use Nofollow Links – Under Google’s rules, a website with links pointing to sites that Google considers spammy can affect the reputation (and ranking) of your own site. This most often occurs when spammers leave comments on blogs. To combat link spam, use the “nofollow” link command. With “nofollow” turned on, a search engine crawler will not follow the link and your site will not get SEO dinged for pointing to a spam site.

Minimize Use of Adobe Flash – Search engine spiders can’t crawl Flash. So any content that is displayed in Flash is nonexistent and won’t get indexed. Flash use is dwindling anyway…even the iPad doesn’t support it. Stay away from Flash other SEO killers that can alienate search engines.

Include “Share This” – Make your content sharable (and make it worth sharing, too!). Social media activity influences Google rankings. The more your content is shared across the social web, the more it will increase the chance of your website ranking higher on Google.

Get Inbound Links – One of the biggest factors in Google rankings is how many other websites link to you. The more links, the better. Getting links from high-traffic reputable sites is more credible than links from no-name websites. Identify influential bloggers in your industry and trade links with them.

Write Good Content – You’ve heard the saying, “Content is king”. It’s true. Focus your website content on how your B2B product or service solves problems for customers. Be sure to have original, valuable content focused on customers as well as your targeted keywords. You want your site attractive to search spiders as well as humans.

In it, she offers 10 tips to get the most value from social media activities.

Driving home the importance of social media marketing to small business owners has proven to be a challenge to its champions. Although the number of small businesses that regularly market through social networks has increased over the years, only about 50% set aside any time and money, and only 12% consider it a must, according to a recentHiscox survey.

You may be one of the enlightened few, however, who see the abundance of business development opportunities in the virtual social interaction frontier, especially when there’s less competition there compared to other marketplaces. If so, then you’re likely looking for ways to better manage your social media marketing activities. Like any marketing campaign, it can be a disappointing vacuum if it’s not done right. So here are 10 tips for small business owners that will help them get the most value out of social media:

1. Meet potential customers where they are most comfortable – Before spending a lot of time on a variety of social media channels, develop a profile (if you haven’t already) of your customers’ social media comfort levels and most frequently used sites or online tools.

Start by looking at the age group, gender, career, and other demographics, as well as the social media activity, of your best customers. If you don’t already, ask customers for their email addresses, Facebook profile names, Twitteraddresses, LinkedIn profiles, etc. so that you can include them in the fun. Consider sending out a quick email survey to your mailing list to ask readers about their social media activities.

If you don’t have a lot of information with which to work, research typical social media behavior for these groups (Internet marketing consultant Roy Morejon provides many helpful statistics.)

Gathering deeper knowledge about your prospects’ online behavior can focus your efforts to get the maximum effect, and it helps you judge how much time you should dedicate to social media marketing.

2. Spend time social networking – Social networking sites are like ponds – if there isn’t any movement, the water becomes stagnant. The key is for small business owners is to keep the waters moving, either by kicking their own feet or by installing a fountain to do it for them.

The more you participate by tweeting messages, updating your Facebook status, “liking” posts and websites that are relevant, posting on pages that share information potential customers are likely to read, retweeting relevant links or articles, and following people who are followed by your typical prospect, the more responses will flow. Try scheduling regular “check in online” times with meal times (breakfast, lunch and dinner).

Be sure to enlist at least one of your coworkers, colleagues or employees to partner with you on social networking tasks. This will lighten the load while providing cross-training.
Keeping a shared log of your social networking activities will prevent retracing your steps, forgetting to follow up on important discussions, missing out on specific opportunities, and duplicating efforts by other team members. It will also help you assess your progress and measure results.

3. Encourage audience participation – One of the best things about social media is the sense of connection and interaction that comes with it. Whenever possible, try to include a call to action in your updates:

• Ask questions in the form of surveys or polls
• State a problem and ask for suggestions
• Raise discussion topics
• Offer simple low-cost contests
• Start a petition (a convenient way to do this is through Change.org)
• Issue a challenge
• Emphasize the importance of acting fast with phrases like “Seats are going fast – reserve yours now!” or “Call, email or post on our page before 11/30 to get your free gift”.

4. Be approachable – As a small business owner, you have the unique advantage of building long-standing, more in-depth relationships with your customers.

Sharing news about your business (new products, event photos, interesting facts, employee profiles, insightful statistics) is a good place to start, but it’s important to have a friendly face.

Don’t hesitate to share motivational quotes, what book you’ve been reading lately, funny photos of the folks at work, even pictures of your pet or family outings. By the time your new customers contact you to inquire about services, they’ll feel like they already know you.

This trust is priceless, so always put your best foot forward (and keep a separate profile for business and family).

5. Protect your brand – Anyone who participates in any online social interaction is open to receiving negative comments or reviews at some point or another – especially businesses.

It’s important to regularly monitor what is said about your company in order to be able to address issues that arise. Convenient ways to do this include searching on the name of your company to see what comes up, and checking in frequently (and thoroughly) on popular social networking sites.

If someone posts something negative about you or your company, do what you can to resolve the issue, and apologize (even if you have to grit your teeth). Depending on how it goes, consider offering a refund or free gift, and ask the customer to revise their review or post an update showing how you made efforts to fix the problem. Let your followers see how you resolve issues in a timely and respectful manner.

6. Keep it simple – Twitter has the right idea by limiting the length of a tweet – it forces us to get the point across in as few words as possible. Your posts on any social media site should address only one message at a time, and should be short, sweet, and to the point.

Whenever possible, include a photo, clip art, a video clip, or a link to add interactivity and supporting information. A great resource for inexpensive stock photos is iStockphoto.com.
Overwhelmed by your choices and short on time? Choose one channel (such as Facebook) to dedicate the majority of your time. The kinds of product or service offerings you provide may determine the best channel in which to spend the most time.

Facebook offers a lot more options for B-to-C interaction, LinkedIn is great for B-to-B, and Twitter is a fast and simple way to broadcast to both. It’s probably a good idea to establish at least a modest presence on Google+, according to an Entrepreneur magazine interview with social media expert Chris Brogan.

7. Be buzzworthy – This is probably the most challenging aspect of social media marketing – generating interest and keeping it. The ultimate goal is to go viral, which is when a message is spread by virtual word of mouth to a larger and larger audience (ideally an audience of likely prospects).

The trick is to be interesting to the people you want to attract without being off-putting.

Depending on your audience, low-cost contests, supporting a cause with one click, extra-special limited time offers, event announcements and motivational videos are all great ways to go viral without the risk of offending readers.

8. Learn from and collaborate with your community – Check out flesh-and-blood networking parties, presentations, and classes about social networking. Local news calendars, city-focused websites, social networking sites, and event-planning sites like Meetup.com are great sources for these kinds of groups.

There are also online groups that have ongoing conversations about getting the most out of Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Look for fellow small business owners who can be role models, trade services for social
marketing assistance or training, or work together to help you promote each other.

9. Outsource – If social networking really isn’t your thing, but you recognize the importance of it, consider offering a low-pay or no-pay internship to a college student pursuing a degree in business, communications, or marketing. It’s as simple as contacting local community colleges and universities and obtaining their forms for posting a position.

You may also find an affordable social media strategy consultant who is willing to be flexible in hours and where to focus his or her efforts, which can help with keeping costs down.
10. Don’t get discouraged – Keep generating movement! The ebb and flow of human behavior is as random online (or more) as it is in “real life.” There will be slumps and surges – and all of them will provide you with new information to put to good use.

A large percentage of online social behavior is invisible from the front end, so be sure to measure your success objectively by including usage statistics like Google Analytics.

Frequently celebrate minor successes with other stakeholders in your small business to earn their support and participation.
